The Triple Threat Manifesto

Hey lovers and friends, It’s Los back again on a cloudy little beach day in Venice. I got my coffee, sandals, incense, and listening to a dope new Tribute to Bjork by a bunch of great bands. Life is Dope and  lots to be thankful for. Some fun, inventive, organic reflections have flowed in this year as I clear my path and make room for new opportunities that are aligned with my path. Have you heard “Success is not saying yes, but actually saying no to things that are not aligned with your path” ?

It has some real merit i think and can be one of the hardest things to do especially when you need those extra bucks or just plain get excited by another’s enthusiasm on their projects like i do. damn Sagitarian traits!!

The other thing about that problem which gets complicated is when you are a triple threat and you’re doing too much at one time and none of it is as good as your A game. I write..most recently for a tv show as a season writer. Some might say “hey you should focus on that”. I directed a very high-end sci -fi music video and people said “No focus on that right now because that will lead you to the other opps”, and my acting coach Ivana Chubbuck might disagree with both and say “Jason your first and true love is acting and if you put your nose to the grindstone then you will really see some great results”. When Barbara Streisand is coming into watch your scenes you know your in a serious acting class.!!  I know…namedrop, but not really this is non promotional but a huge kick in the butt  to remind myself holy shit this is no joke when i go up and even do a scene for class it’s always got to be my best and strongest choices.

Does anyone else feel like they would love love to stop doing the other stuff for long enough to find out if they had what it takes on just one of their gifts?! This year I am just looking at my overall work from last year and critiquing it. My writing is good, not “wow, this has got to be made!!” which is what we need to do as writers and it’s what i have done in the past when i make that a priority. Remember there are a million other writers out there who are DEVOTING every second to the writing so making sure the head is in the game is crucial.  I bet if i just wrote for 6 months and did not do the other jobs I would see some better results. If you get paid to direct, act, produce, script supervise, etc how can you “afford” to stop and just write? Believe in yourself and find  a way.

I promised myself i would never go back to restaurants after a certain time frame and this year I realized that acting and getting representation and making real friendships with casting directors and producers is VITAL to that part of the game. It is something I have never done because i usually am hired by a producer or director i already know. Yes that’s awesome when it happens, but what’s better is to find 10 or 15 CD’S,PRODUCERS,DIRECTORS i want to work with and get on their short list. If that means i have to serve food and free up a schedule instead of doing my normal 12-16 hour/6 day work weeks on set as scripty or whatever than that’s what i’m going to do. Respect the 15 years of acting by giving it some real breathing room and nurture it. This has already given me a lot more time each week to vocalize thoughts on my acting career and sharing those goals with others. If you can’t say it, how can you do it? I am a leading man  and see myself as the first spanish cross-over star. Spanish woman we have alot of cross overs already, J.LO,ETC. but not many males who aren’t ” spanish spanish loverboys” more than seen as an american guy. Antonio Banderas, Javier Bardem are some of are top guys but they aren’t seen as guys who you wouldn’t capitalize on their spanish vibes from. Eddie Murphy did it for blacks in the 80’s and Will Smith is no longer seen as a black actor after breakthroughs like “Pursuit of Happiness”.  America seems more ready than ever for this to happen in latino culture and Edward James Olmos and Lou Diamond Phillips  and John Leguizamo are  guys who have layed   of the bricks down for this and that i respect the hell out of. YOUNG GUNS !!! OH YEAH!! WHAT SUCKA!

It’s true that you should master the rules before you can break them in my experience and adapting to change is the biggest part of making it. I’m planning to direct some really fun and innovative music videos and commercials thru the year, but acting will be 100 percent of my focus rather than 30 percent for each part of my triple threat pie.  What needs the most work in your triple threat balancing act? What part of your team needs the most focus right now? Definite clues to how to move thru the juggling so many of us are convinced we have already mastered.  Have a great month of APRIL and Take a LOOK at the PREMIERE OF THE FIRST MUSIC VIDEO I HAVE DIRECTED VISITORS “SUPER SONIC BOOM”
